Ian Hawes

Ian Hawes has been associated with Polar Research for more than 45 years, since obtaining a PhD in algal ecology with the British Antarctic Survey. He is currently based in Tauranga and is an honorary professor with Waikato University. His research specialty is light, light harvesting and aquatic photosynthesis, in planktonic, ice-based and benthic communities, in marine and freshwater systems. Current research projects include cyanobacterial mat ecosystems, seagrass and marine algal eco-physiology, sea ice ecology, remote sensing of water quality and, increasingly, protected area management.
